I am renting a property from an ex, with no written tenancy agreement.?

With no written agreement, and no proof of a verbal one, it will be the default contract for tenants in your location. The rent amount would be what he has been accepting, until he changes it following the default requirements. Landlord - tenant laws are really complex, and vary a lot from country to country, and even within countries at times. In most places, you will be on a month to month tenancy of some kind. In the UK, that would mean he has to give you 60 days notice to leave, and you have to continue to pay rent for that time. After that, you have to be out, or he can start eviction procedures. Eviction itself can take six months or more to fully complete, but by that stage you will owe a lot more than just the rent for legal fees, costs and similar (which he can claim off you even after you leave), and you will have it appearing on credit checks, which will make it near impossible to rent elsewhere. You could try to fight it, but its likely to be very expensive, and only work for a short period - at best you get a delay in the contract ending. You best bet is to negotiate leaving as soon as practical. You might even be able to get him to help pay a deposit to speed up the process.
