My landlords sold the building without my knowledge, 6 apartments I?
Your security deposit is covered by the laws of the state you reside in. You have no real status in the building. If you are lucky, the new owners will provide a different apartment at the same rent and credit your deposit. All they owe you is 30 days to vacate and possibly return of your deposit. If I were leaving, I would deduct my deposit from rent owed. As for working around the renovation, it depends on what they are doing. Most often, landlords only renovate vacant units. Are renovations grounds for rent increases? Of course but as a month-to-month tenant, they can raise your rent just because they don't like the way you part your hair or because they got out of the wrong side of bed or because they want to buy car. Obviously, if the other units have been renovated, this situation has been going on for some months. I simply can't understand why you haven't discussed all this with the new owners.
